My Metaphor about being a Second Language Teacher
Being A Language Teacher is Like Being an Interpreter/Translator
Being a language teacher is like being an ‘Interpreter/Translator.’ In addition to both professions using oral and written language to communicate, they also use sign language to interpret and communicate a language. Furthermore, both professions incorporate facial expressions, gestures, body language, eye-contact, posture and body movement to get the message across faster. Non-verbal cues are very important communication tools, as they emphasize meaning and demonstrate understanding. Overall, teachers, like interpreters/translator, have to use public speaking skills to effectively communicate with various audiences for different contexts.
Being a Teacher Educator is Like Being a Holistic Leader
Being a teacher educator is like being a ‘Holistic Leader,’ as they help others strike a balance in life and identify their values. Also, second language teachers help students feel relaxed, cope with anxiety and become confident learners. In addition, teacher helps students take care of themselves emotionally, mentally and physically. Therefore, teachers help students discuss their feelings and perspectives while learning a second language. Furthermore, students need to balance school by going out for walks, listening to music and participating in sports. In addition, they need to eat healthy and take care of themselves. In addition, teachers can reduce anxiety by having students come prepared to class and seek opportunities to practice speaking the second language. Moreover, like a Holistic leader, teachers need to help students feel welcomed to a comfortable learning environment, where they can take risks to participate and make mistakes; this is a natural part of learning. As a result, it is our duty as second language teachers, like Holisitic leaders, to help and guide our students towards their goals, in order for them to gain the pragmatics necessary for the real word.
