Applying Theory Into Practice –My Praxis – CLTE through my B.Ed, TESOL, Hon.BA & Workshops (FHAO)
I would like share my reflections on how I have incorporated “praxis” into my classroom, by merging my knowledge of theory and practice relating to social justice education.
The Situated Nature of Programs and Practices
My teacher education programs, such as the B.Ed from OISE, the TESOL, Hon.BA from UofT, and PD workshops, along with my wide-range of work and teaching experiences, have allowed me to incorporate a “critical” approach to teaching, which includes ‘productive possibilities,’ and ‘transformative practice’ that support social justice education.
Responsiveness to Learners, Dialogic Engagement & Reflexivity
During my B.Ed at OISE, I studied EDU3508 – School and Society with Prof. Bathseba Opini. This was a very exciting class, as we reflected on debatable topics related to praxis, and the “critical” approach to teaching, through social justice education. She was an absolutely amazing professor, who taught us the value of inclusive education, which I still reflect back on, until today! Moreover, I would like to share Prof.Opini’s staff directory link, which provides research topics she has investigated, along with titles of books she has published:

Moreover, throughout this ‘School and Society’ course at OISE, Prof.Opini facilitated studies in “critical” topics, such as:
1.Becoming A Reflective Teacher – Carl A. Grant & Kenneth M. Zeichner
2. Promoting Equity Minded Student Leadership – Terezia Zorc, Gulzar Charania, & Ken Jeffers
3.Towards Anti-racist Education: Empowering Minority Students - Jim Cummins
4. Equity Pedagogy: An Essential Component of Multicultural Education– Cherry A. McGee Banks & James A. Banks
5. Challenges for Anti-Racist Educators in Ontario Today – George J. Sefa Dei
Praxis
In addition, to developing my praxis, which formed through my B.Ed from OISE, TESOL and Hon.B.A from UofT, I was also influence by the FHAO – Facing History and Ourselves Workshops, which helped me to better implement inclusive education and social justice. Overall, FHAO has been promoting democracy and peace education for over 30 years, by helping educators become activists against racism, anti-Semitism, and prejudice:

Most importantly, these FHAO workshops have shaped my critical approach to teaching, as I apply the theory I have learned into my practice of inclusive education. As a result, I have learned to build a “critical” approach “to contribute to the shaping of a social world in which all people, regardless of language, ethnicity, colour, or class, have equal voices, access, and possibilities.” (pg.37, Hawkins & Norton)
